How Deep Were US Agents In Mayo Kidnapping?

The kidnapping of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada on July 25, 2024, and his rendition to New Mexico, where he was handed into U.S. agents, is one of the craziest events in decades of crazy cartel wars in Mexico. It has huge implications, sparking a Sinaloa Cartel civil war, that has seen more than 3,800 murders, 4,400 kidnappings and 211 people shot dead by soldiers in the state in two years.

Yet there is still much we need to learn about the incident, and especially the role of U.S. agents. Joe Hefferon, a former New Jersey police captain, conducted an excellent investigation, which I discuss with him on this episode of the CrashOut podcast, and you can also read here. He discovers fascinating info that point to a wider role of U.S. federal agents in what they have already said was called “Operation Air Kings.” The most important findings include -

The tail number of the Beechcraft King Air that transported Mayo was cloned from a New Mexico company but also used in another plane in Brazil. This suggests use of the number in federal government operations.
A military plane landed in the Doña Ana County airfield shortly before the landing of Mayo.
Wording of a U.S. government message about “a highly complex, secretive, and daring arrest” suggests a much bigger role than simply arresting Mayo off the plane.

Efectivamente, el 6 de junio de 2021, Rocha ganó con el 57 por ciento de los votos, según el recuento oficial, en medio de acusaciones de que hombres armados intimidaron a los votantes e incluso mantuvieron a punta de pistola a políticos de la oposición durante horas. “Ya no era participar en una elección en una democracia para ganar o perder, sino para no perder la vida,” dijo la legisladora estatal Paola Iveth Gárate.

El Cártel de Sinaloa lleva mucho tiempo sobornando a políticos. In early June 2021, according to U.S. prosecutors, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, the son of El Chapo, and his half-brother Ovidio, met with the politician Rubén Rocha Moya to discuss the gubernatorial election in Sinaloa the following Sunday. The Chapitos, as the sons of Chapo are known, had already been supporting Rocha in the campaign, according to the allegations. But in the final meeting, a personal deal was cemented in which the gangsters would secure the vote and Rocha would return the favor once he became governor.

“At the meeting, which was protected by Cartel sicarios armed with machineguns and other weapons, Ivan and Ovidio promised that the Chapitos would ensure that ROCHA MOYA won the gubernatorial election,” it says in the indictment. “In exchange, ROCHA MOYA promised the Chapitos Leaders that, if elected, he would ensure that officials friendly to the Chapitos’ drug trafficking would be placed in positions of authority.”

Sure enough, on June 6, 2021, Rocha won with 57 percent of the ballots, according to the official count, amid accusations that gunmen intimidated voters and even held opposition politicians at gunpoint for hours. “It wasn’t participating in an election, where you win or lose, but about not losing your life,” said state lawmaker Paola Iveth Gárate.

The Sinaloa Cartel has long paid off politicians. But under Rocha, it’s alleged, the relationship got more extreme, with the governor working closely with a particular faction of the cartel, and police officers handing over their targets, including a U.S. informant and his family, to its gunmen.

With this protection, Iván established a powerful grip on state capital Culiacán, “taxing” beer distributors, opening California style marijuana dispensaries and having armed punteros throughout the city. Under his reign, murders actually went down for a period while the Chapitos enjoyed vast wealth from trafficking synthetic drugs.

Yet in 2024, the Sinaloa Cartel exploded into brutal civil war as Iván faced off the son of El Mayo alongside an alliance of gangsters pitted against him. Iván had himself been underestimated before, but now it appears he underestimated…

Since at least the seventies, hash producers in the Kingdom of Morocco have churned out tons of “chocolate” for the European market, spawning the Mocro-Maffia in Holland and Belgium, with offshoots in Spain, France and beyond. The Moroccan Mafia are a hard nut for journalists to crack but to get a glimpse into this smuggling empire, CrashOut’s narco-respondent Niko Vorobyov landed an interview with a female Moroccan mule (or hash transporter) who got in with the bad crowd and moved the smelly stuff. It’s a fascinating and timely tale.

Fadwa says she kept away from crime in her native Morocco until she told the police about a hash-trafficking suitor, and he decided to claim she was in on the deal. Behind the Netflix Film, La Captura

Many episodes in the life of narco Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán are as crazy as fiction, including his two prison escapes. But details of his final capture in the city of Los Mochis in January, 2016, were especially nuts. When Mexican marines stormed his safe house, Chapo and his head of security Cholo Iván escaped down a drainage tunnel, only to flee flooding through a manhole wearing vests and steal a car. In a twist of fate, Chapo was then stopped by two lowly federal police patrolmen who stashed him in a roadside motel terrified of Sinaloa Cartel gunmen before they could hand him to the marines.

Journalist Héctor de Mauleón dug up details of this incredible tale, which he compares to the Glenn Ford Western 3:10 to Yuma, in a series of stories (or cronicas). A decade later, it has come out as Netflix movie called La Captura, or in English, Facing El Chapo, which is action packed and uses a certain artistic license while also providing a real window to the terror of the Mexican Cartel Wars.

In contrast to most narco movies and series, Captura centers on the police officers, who it portrays as heroes turning down million dollar bribes and risking their lives to do the right thing. I have long commented on how Mexico struggles to have cop heroes, while narcos are glorified, and I wonder if they have finally found some. I also wonder if this reflects a bigger shift in the culture as people here are fed up of crime while there is huge support for Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch cracking down. Or is there more to this story of why these police handed in Chapo and the politics of his arrest?

In this episode of CrashOut Podcast, I talk to De Mauleón about these issues and how the mighty Chapo could end up in a vest on the street with one bodyguard having to jack a car. The veteran journalist gets into fine details about the incident and about what happened to the police officers after they busted the most wanted narco on the planet.

In the first minutes of Aug. 15, 2016, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán was celebrating his 33rd birthday with his brother Jesús Alfredo, four male friends and nine women, at the luxurious La Leche restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when a squad of gunmen stormed in. In the scene captured on security cameras, the assailants raise their rifles and go straight for Iván’s long mesa in the center of the eatery, letting the women hide under the table and marching the men out at gunpoint.

The kidnapping of Chapo’s two sons (or Chapitos, “the Little Chapos”) took place in the territory of El Mencho, who had originally worked with a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel but had broken off to forge his own kingdom. Yet Dámaso “Mini Lic” López, a friend-turned-enemy of the Chapitos, later claimed to journalist Luis Chaparro that various narcos were involved in the plot, and said he personally sent word that they would be in the restaurant with little security. After the gunmen had taken the Chapitos, he received a message: “The birds are now in the cage.”

Mini Lic claims that Iván had angered other narcos as he tried to take over the empire of his father, who was in prison, and they wanted to take him out. “They picked them up to kill them,” Mini Lic said. “It was not for money. It was not for a scare. It was to kill them.”

Sinaloa kingpins El Mayo and their father Chapo rushed to bargain for their lives though. To help these negotiations, Dámaso claims, Chapo organized the kidnapping of Mencho’s own son in prison. “He told El Mencho ‘If you give me my children, I will give you yours,’ ” Mini Lic said.

After four days, the Chapitos were released to go back to trafficking in Sinaloa. Yet for some veteran narcos, they had looked weak and vulnerable. They were seen as “juniors,” or young rich kids, who had been to private schools, posted on social media and loved Ferraris and Lamborghinis but lacked the grit and ruthlessness of their father, who had grown up wearing sandals, selling oranges at 11 and scraping gum from opium poppies at 15. Some of these players believed they could take the turf away.

Still, by 2020 Iván had consolidated power to become one of the richest and most feared narcos in Mexico. He controlled Sinaloa state capital Culiacán and much of the state’s police forces, business sector and increasingly its politicians. The Chapitos even rivaled the veteran Sinaloa capo Mayo in terms of power, leading to seething tension. This is the story of how Iván graduated from junior to kingpin, through violence, trafficking and corruption.

Estados Unidos ha revocado la visa de Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, conocido como Andy, hijo del expresidente mexicano AMLO, según reveló Andy el jueves por la noche al publicar una furiosa carta dirigida al presidente Donald Trump en Instagram. The United States has revoked the visa of Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, known as Andy, the son of former Mexican president AMLO, Andy revealed on Thursday evening when he posted a furious letter to President Donald Trump on Instagram. In the letter, Andy called the move political and “Hitlerian” (meaning Hitler-like), and said it came from a “sick conservative phobia” against Mexico’s ruling populist leftist Morena party, which Andy is in.

Andy, 40, the second son of AMLO, served as the Morena organization secretary and is reported to be heading to be a federal deputy next year. In the letter, he said there was no reason to cancel his visa and suggested Trump fire Secretary of State Marco Rubio and undersecretary Christopher Landau, who he called the “quita visa,” or “visa snatcher.” However, he added that he didn’t care that he couldn’t fly north of the Rio Grande. “Señor President, it doesn’t cause me any problems not visiting the United States in these decadent unfortunate times of hatred, racism, drug addiction, family breakdown,” he wrote.

The move comes as the U.S. State Department is reported to have canceled the visas of dozens of Mexican politicians, many from Morena, amid accusations of links between officials and organized crime. The U.S. attorney general’s office revealed…

"El Chapito" - Iván Archivaldo sigue luchando

En el surrealista mundo de los narcocorridos, o baladas sobre drogas, en Sinaloa, México, los videos suelen contener breves escenas dramáticas que retratan al capo del narco del que se habla en la canción. Miembros de la banda y actores interpretan los papeles, pero un productor de Culiacán que trabaja en estos videos me contó que es común ver a sicarios auténticos en las escenas, e incluso a veces un capo real aparece en la grabación y saluda. Y los narcocorridos suelen ser (aunque no siempre) encargados y pagados por los narcos que aparecen en ellos.

Una de esas escenas apareció en un video de 2015 de la banda Enigma Norteño y su disco El Señor Iván, sobre el narco Iván Archivaldo Guzmán. Iván es hijo de El Chapo y a veces se le conoce como El Chapito, mientras que a él y a tres de sus hermanos se les conoce colectivamente como Los Chapitos.

El video presenta al cantante de Enigma, Ernesto Barajas, en el papel de Iván, mientras bebe un carísimo coñac Louis XIII y juega a las cartas tradicionales españolas cuando aparece un asistente vestido con traje y pajarita. «Disculpe la molestia, señor», dice el asistente. «Aquí le traigo la carta que le mandó su papa». Barajas irrumpe cantando sobre Chapo escribiéndole desde la (supuestamente) prisión de máxima seguridad de México para nombrarlo nuevo jefe de su imperio de la droga. Mientras Barajas canta:

“Escribió la carta el Chapo con un destino final
Sabemos el remitente, tenemos un nuevo jefe

Es una de las varios corridos que Enigma tiene en su repertorio sobre Iván, de quien incluso se rumorea que aparece en uno de sus videos bailando de espaldas con una chica. La cercanía de los cantantes de corridos con los narcos reales implica que no solo comparten su fama, sino que también se ven arrastrados a su mundo violento. El año pasado, unos sicarios asesinaron a tiros al cantante Barajas en un estacionamiento de Zapopan, Jalisco.

Como dice la canción, Iván heredó el imperio de su padre e incluso lo expandió, probablemente amasando una fortuna con el fentanilo. Sin embargo, consolidar su control fue una lucha larga y ardua, y finalmente Iván condujo a su reino a una catastrófica guerra de cárteles. Mientras tanto, dos de sus hermanos cooperan con la fiscalía estadounidense en un caso que debilita su protección política. In the surreal world of narco corridos, or drug ballads, in Sinaloa, Mexico, the videos often contain short dramatic scenes portraying the kingpin being sung about. Members of the band plus actors will play the roles, but a Culiacán producer who works on these videos described to me how it’s common to have authentic sicario hitmen in scenes and sometimes even a real kingpin turns up at a shoot and says hello. And narco corridos are often (though not always) commissioned and paid for by the drug lords featured in them.

One such scene was in a 2015 video for the band Enigma Norteño and their record El Señor Iván about narco Iván Archivaldo Guzmán. Iván is the son of El Chapo and is sometimes referred to as El Chapito, while him and three of his brothers are known collectively as Los Chapitos, or Little Chapos.

The video features Enigma singer Ernesto Barajas in the role of Iván as he sips super-expensive Louis XIII Cognac and plays traditional Spanish cards when an assistant roles up in a suit and bow tie. “Sorry for the bother señor,” the assistant says. “I bring a letter that your father sent.” Barajas bursts into song about Chapo penning to him from Mexico’s (supposedly) top security prison to appoint him as the new head of his drug empire. As Barajas croons:

“Chapo wrote the letter with a final destination,

We know the sender, we have a new boss,

Don’t be sad, they have awarded the position.”

It’s one of several ballads that Enigma has in its repertoire about Iván, who is even rumored to actually appear in one of their videos dancing with a girl with his back turned. The closeness of corrido singers to real-life narcos means they not only get a share of their glory, however, but also get pulled into their violent world. Last year, gunmen shot dead the singer Barajas in a parking garage in Zapopan, Jalisco.

As the song says, Iván did indeed take over the empire of his father and he even expanded aspects of it, likely making a fortune from fentanyl. It was a long hard struggle to consolidate his control though, and Iván eventually led his kingdom into a catastrophic cartel war. Meanwhile, two of Ivan’s own brothers are cooperating with U.S. prosecutors in a case that weakens his political protection. Still, Iván was underestimated when he first rose to take control and he continues to defeat expectations and survive. Who is the human behind the kingpin?

¿Acaso un misterioso hombre negro pelirrojo con el rostro marcado por cicatrices le entregó a Lee Harvey Oswald 6500 dólares en efectivo en la embajada cubana en Ciudad de México, dos meses antes de que asesinara a John F. Kennedy? ¿O era el agente doble nicaragüense que informó de esto a la policía secreta mexicana un impostor que buscaba fama y fortuna? ¿O todo formaba parte de una operación encubierta de la CIA para desviar la atención de los verdaderos asesinos?

Seis décadas después del asesinato de JFK en Dealey Plaza, Dallas, aquel fatídico 22 de noviembre de 1963, un suceso que cambiaría el curso de la historia, siguen apareciendo documentos sobre este complejo y desconcertante caso. Un montón de papeles polvorientos que ofrecen pistas se encuentra en el Archivo General de la Nación de México, ahora ubicado en el pintoresco edificio de la antigua prisión de Lecumberri. Tuve la oportunidad de entrar y examinar los archivos de la Dirección Federal de Seguridad (DFS), la policía secreta mexicana de la época, durante el viaje de Oswald a México en septiembre de 1963.

La carpeta catalogada como Exp. 36-69-963 revela jugosos informes de agentes mexicanos que siguieron a los implicados, entre ellos: una secretaria mexicana de la embajada que supuestamente tuvo una aventura con el embajador cubano; un turista británico que casualmente se encontró con Oswald en el autobús; y el peculiar personaje de un agente doble nicaragüense que afirma haber visto cómo se intercambiaba dinero. Aparecen nombres conocidos del espionaje mexicano, como Fernando Gutiérrez Barrios, quien más tarde se convirtió en jefe de los servicios de inteligencia del país y luego en gobernador de Veracruz, y Luis Echeverría, quien llegó a ser presidente y fue informante de la CIA.

El DFS se fundó en 1947, el mismo año que la CIA y con su ayuda, y siempre mantuvo una estrecha relación con su homólogo estadounidense. De hecho, algunos de los interrogatorios realizados por el DFS en los archivos de México también aparecen en documentos desclasificados de la CIA, resumidos y traducidos al inglés (aunque resulta interesante observar qué detalles conserva y cuáles omite el Company). La CIA también “tomó prestados” (en su propia jerga) testigos del DFS, incluyendo una fuente clave en este caso, quien se quejó de que los agentes mexicanos lo amenazaron con “colgarlo de los testículos”.

Oswald ingresó a México con la visa mostrada arriba, la cual fue emitida en Nueva Orleans, y cruzó la frontera en Nuevo Laredo el 26 de septiembre, regresando el 3 de octubre. Según descubrió la DFS, tomó un autobús de Transporte Fronteras hacia la Ciudad de México y se hospedó en el Hotel Comercio, ubicado en la calle Sahagún, en el centro histórico de la capital.

Supuestamente, Oswald intentaba obtener una visa para Cuba, desde donde viajaría a Rusia, e incluso habló de ello con el turista británico en el autobús. Fue un comportamiento extraño, ya que el ex marine había desertado previamente a la Unión Soviética y luego había regresado a Estados Unidos con su esposa rusa.

Did a mysterious red-haired black man with a scarred face hand Lee Harvey Oswald $6,500 in cash at the Cuban embassy in Mexico City, two months before he shot John F. Kennedy? Or was the Nicaraguan double agent who reported this to Mexico’s secret police a fabricator seeking fame and fortune? Or was this all part of a CIA counter operation to divert attention from the real assassins?

Six decades after the assassination of JFK at Dealey plaza in Dallas on that fateful Nov. 22, 1963, which would shift history, documents continue to drip in on the sprawling confounding case. One pile of dusty papers offering clues lies in Mexico’s national archive, now in the colorful building of the former Lecumberri prison. I had a chance to get in there and wade through the files of the Dirección Federal de Seguridad, or DFS, Mexico’s secret police of the time, on Oswald’s trip to Mexico in September 1963.

The folder catalogued as Exp. 36-69-963 reveals some juicy reports by Mexican agents who followed players, including: a Mexican secretary at the embassy reported to have an affair with the Cuban ambassador; a British tourist who happened to meet Oswald on the bus; and the curious character of a Nicaraguan double agent who says he saw money change hands. There are familiar names in Mexican espionage involved including Fernando Gutiérrez Barrios, who later became the country’s spy chief and then governor of Veracruz, and Luis Echeverría, who became president and was a CIA informant.

The files also contain interesting lists of questions that agents filed at various times during the investigation, like this one below. “How much was the assassin paid?” an agent asks. “How much did DURAN get for her role in the plot?” he writes, referring to the Mexican secretary.

The DFS was founded in 1947, in the same year as the CIA and with assistance from it, and always had a close relationship with its American big brother. Indeed, some of the interrogations by the DFS in the Mexico files also appear in declassified CIA docs summarized and translated into English (although it’s interesting to see what details the Company keeps and omits). The CIA also “borrowed” (in their own speak) witnesses from the DFS, including a key source in this case, who would complain the Mexican agents threatened that he would be “hanged by the testicles.”

Oswald came into Mexico using this visa above, which was issued in New Orleans, and crossed the border at Nuevo Laredo on Sept. 26, going back on Oct. 3. He took a Transporte Fronteras bus to Mexico City, the DFS found, and stayed at the Hotel Comercio, which was on Sahagún street in the capital’s historic center.

Oswald was supposedly trying to get a visa to Cuba, from where he would go to Russia, and he even talked about this to the British tourist on the bus. It was strange behavior as the former marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union and then gone back to the United States with his Russian bride.

El piloto sinaloense de 32 años conocido como “El Jando” confesó en una declaración ante un tribunal estadounidense en abril que trabajó con el Cártel de Sinaloa durante más de una década, transportando cientos de kilos de cocaína y cargamentos de armas, y supervisando una flota de aeronaves “que incluía Caravans, Piper, King Air y Cessna 206”. También se encargaba de las comunicaciones de una sección del cártel y llegó a reportar directamente a Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, hijo de El Chapo y líder de la facción de los Chapitos. Su lucrativa carrera terminó en febrero de 2025 cuando soldados mexicanos lo arrestaron tras un tiroteo, y fue entregado a custodia estadounidense en agosto.

Lawyer: Jando Not Arrested After Mayo Flight

The 32-year old Sinaloan pilot known as “El Jando” (pronounced Hando) confessed in a statement to a U.S. court in April that he worked with the Sinaloa Cartel for over a decade, flying planes with hundreds of kilos of cocaine and with shipments of guns, and overseeing a fleet of aircraft “including Caravans, Pipers, King Air and Cessna 206’s.” He also ran communications for a section of the cartel and rose to report directly to Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, the son of El Chapo and leader of the Chapitos faction. His lucrative career came to an end in February 2025 when Mexican soldiers arrested him after a shoot out, and he was transferred into U.S. custody in August.

Jando gained real infamy, however, this last month when it was alleged he was the pilot who flew the veteran kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada from Sinaloa to an airport in New Mexico after he was kidnapped on July 25, 2024. Federal agents arrested Mayo at the Doña Ana County airfield when he landed in a Beechcraft King Air and he was finally given a life sentence on Monday. Joaquín Guzmán López, another son of Chapo, was also arrested coming off the plane, confessed to kidnapping Mayo and is cooperating with U.S. prosecutors. The incident sparked a cartel civil war in Sinaloa, which has suffered more than 3,500 murders and thousands of disappearances since.

However, speaking by phone to CrashOut, Jando’s lawyer, Jonathan Savella, said that Jando was not booked or charged following Mayo’s abduction. “I can confirm he was not arrested that day. I cannot confirm his location that day,” Savella said.

The statement adds yet more mystery to the confounding case of Jando, the controversial cross-border kidnapping of Mayo, and how U.S. federal agents handled (or organized) it. Even Jando’s name is murky: he is identified as Mauro Alberto Núñez Ojeda (including in his indictment) but in some documents is called Alejandro Ojeda Ávila (and Jando could be short for Alejandro).

If Jando were indeed the pilot who flew Mayo into the hands of U.S. agents his journey is remarkable. He would have participated in a cross-border kidnapping yet been released by U.S. federal agents without charges and traveled back to Mexico. A U.S. court then issued a sealed indictment for him in January 2025, Mexican security forces arrested him that February and Mexico expelled him into U.S. custody as part of an extraordinary transfer of prisoners in August.

La última jugada de El Mayo

Mientras Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, probablemente el narco más prolífico que haya salido de México, se encontraba en el Centro de Detención Metropolitano (MDC) de Brooklyn, Nueva York, su equipo legal se enfrentó a un desafío. La penitenciaría puso al capo de 76 años en aislamiento, lo que representa un riesgo para la salud mental del recluso (o, dicho de forma más sencilla, lo vuelve loco).

El Mayo's Last Hustle

As Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, probably the most prolific narco trafficker to ever come out of Mexico, was in the Metropolitan Detention Center, or MDC, in Brooklyn, New York, his legal team encountered a challenge. The penitentiary put the 76-year old kingpin in solitary confinement and this poses a risk of damaging the mental health of the prisoner (or to put it more plainly, driving him nuts).

To counter this, the legal team made sure people were visiting him constantly, including legal assistants and his main lawyer, Frank Perez, the most prominent U.S. attorney to defend narcos alongside Jeffrey Lichtman, who repped Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. When I interviewed Perez in Mexico City last year, I asked him what Mayo would talk about during these hours. Perez said that the drug lord had two main topics of conversation: the cattle on his ranch in Sinaloa, and politics, including both Mexican and U.S. affairs.

The anecdote shines light on Mayo’s sentencing today in New York and the settlement he ultimately came to. This morning at 11 am New York time, Judge Brian Cogan, who also sentenced Mayo’s partner El Chapo and corrupt security chief Genaro García Luna, handed Mayo a life sentence.

The aging godfather received the sentence after limping into the court room in an orange jumpsuit, and reportedly exclaimed an “hay cabrón!” (or a “damn, man!”) to show his difficulty getting up, according to reporters in the gallery. He apologized for his crimes and gave a short sermon about needing to end the cartel wars in Mexico.

“Violence should stop in Mexico,” he said. “Too many lives are lost. It destroys families. It thrusts youths into a life without a future. Nobody will win this war.”

Prosecutors emphasized that Mayo would die in prison, giving them a victory over cartels in a case that U.S. agents worked on for decades, and in which Mayo was finally arrested after a controversial cross-border kidnapping two years ago, in July 2024.

“El Mayo was the world’s single biggest drug trafficker this century,” Joseph Nocella Jr, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a press conference outside the court. “I hope that El Mayo’s life sentence brings some small measure of comfort to those families who have suffered so much pain. Drug kingpins die in prison. El Mayo’s fate is to die in prison.”

However, while the U.S. government has indeed ensured that Mayo will spend his last years in a U.S. cell, the wily kingpin also came to a calculated settlement around asset seizures and cooperation that will likely allow him to stay out of the punishing Supermax prison, where Chapo is, and avoid more solitary confinement. Mayo survived for a half a century in the drug game because he was a deal maker, fascinated by politics. In his sentencing, he brokered his last bargain, which I lay out here.

Manuel Alejandro Moreno Serna, más conocido como Alex Serna, sorprendió por su valentía al condenar la destrucción ambiental y la corrupción política en su estado natal de Guerrero, México. Combinando el estilo de periodista, activista e influencer, este hombre de 39 años publicó videos para 164.000 suscriptores en YouTube y otros 33.000 en Facebook, además de en otras redes sociales.

Serna opinó sobre diversos temas, desde asuntos exteriores hasta el mundo del espectáculo mexicano, pero su verdadera pasión era el medio ambiente. Denunció la contaminación de los ríos, la destrucción de playas y el envenenamiento del agua. Publicó los nombres de las empresas responsables, demostró la falta de permisos y señaló a los políticos que, según él, estaban implicados. Todo esto a pesar de vivir en la ciudad turística de Zihuatanejo, asolada por una guerra territorial entre cárteles rivales, que también se infiltran en negocios y grupos políticos de la zona y han obligado a varios periodistas a huir.

«Alex Serna informó con tanta libertad como si estuviera ajeno al entorno en el que estaba parado», escribieron sus colegas periodistas del medio El Tlacolol, con sede en Chlipancingo, capital del estado de Guerrero. «Lo que sí hacía Alex Serna, y de forma contundente, era cuestionar al poder ya los poderosos.».

En marzo, Serna publicó sobre una amenaza que recibió y dijo que la cuenta detrás de ella estaba vinculada a un negocio que estaba investigando, propiedad de una poderosa familia política. “Bájale de huevos hijo de tu puta madre”, decía la amenaza. “No estamos jugando ya tenemos tu ubicación y todo”.

Serna no se rindió. Continuó informando hasta su último video, publicado el 20 de junio, en el que mostraba daños ambientales en pueblos cercanos y acusaba a un empresario extranjero de estar involucrado. Ese día, mientras México se centraba en el Mundial, con partidos disputándose en Ciudad de México, Guadalajara y Monterrey, desapareció.

Desaparecer en México es, lamentablemente, algo común; el gobierno tiene registrada una lista de más de 130.000 personas desaparecidas. En Zihuatanejo, al menos otras diez personas desaparecieron entre finales de mayo y junio, y las familias, atemorizadas, solo denunciaron los casos en silencio. «Ese municipio se convirtió en un pozo negro», escribieron los periodistas en El Tlacolol. «El miedo en Zihuatanejo es insoportable».

En medio de este terror, pasaron al menos diez días antes de que la desaparición de Serna se conociera en las noticias. Incluso entonces, transcurrieron varios días más antes de que el gobierno estatal confirmara que su cadáver se encontraba en una morgue pública; según versiones, su propia familia también había sido amenazada y aterrorizada de ir allí.
