Elites and intellectuals on the left find this distateful, but working people that live with these criminals on a daily basis often see it differently. It's unfortunate that such extreme authoritarian measures are taking place, but left has only itself to blame by having failed to protect the working people that they claim to represent. Bukeles measures have been effective while liberal policies have failed. If the left wants to make a credible argument against such policies, they need to show success, but if you look at liberal cities in the USA, socialist policies in Mexico, Venezuela, etc, there are only failures.

Yeah, if people don't want these authoritarian methods a better alternative needs to be offered.

It would be easier and probably most fair if Maduro (ex bus driver current #1 dictator) would take his own people back

The feeling a victim has watching those gangbangers being treated like animals must be extremely gratifying.

Yeah, I think that is why these videos are so effective in El Salvador and help make Bukele so popular...

Yet bukele is seen as a monster for some reason but not someone like maduro?

Most of bukele hate tends to come from outside of el salvador for some odd reason and by non salvadorans 🤡

I'm Especially astounded by Mexicans hating bukele like you guys are the last people I would expect to hate on a leader for hitting organized crime hard.

President Maduro has condemned the deportations today likening them to the Nazi's and the holocaust but that is just bitterness from the collapse of their negotiations over oil. Trump revoked the license of Chevron Oil to operate in Venezuela. Why would the United States send gangs back to the prisons where they had almost free reign in and the country that was promoting their leaving in the first place.

El Salvador was paid for only one year of incarceration but I think El Salvador will determine the time of the release. Compared to the other prisoners, they may be incarcerated for a long time. Prisoners cost taxpayers anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000 a year in the United States, so El Salvador is the Dollar Store for incarceration for the United States. The prison was inexpensive to make and extremely modular and quick to install. Definitely room for expansion.

We are now seeing an attack on the judicial system in the United States that really has no checks and balances. The homeless encampments in cities of the United States was only challenged by ignoring judicial orders and then winning the arguments in the Supreme Court. This problem of the judicial system exceeding it's authority was created by Congress's refusal to vote on major economic, cultural and political issues. An action of political cowardice and to hide behind the skirts of judicial opinions.

Thanks there Tom. There are many angles in the story there as you point out. I wonder if this off-shoring prisoners will stick or not...

It depends on whether the Trump administration is willing to ignore judicial decisions and push to impeach judges who exceed their authority. Republicans and Democrats will always be a problem and privatized prisons though. I still think that Guantanamo Bay would be the legal precedent for deposing of designated terrorists but I am glad that Bukele's solution is getting publicity now. I have had more people tell me "so this is the Bukele you were talking about."

Crime is a problem that politicians in this country want to sweep under the rug and have failed to notice the rise of vigilante justice that was so prevalent during the 70's and 80's. Police departments definitely did and still do not want to publicize these cases. When major sports and tv celebrities are supporting more anti-crime efforts, that is a sure sign of the massive turnaround from defunding the police. Trump's solution with El Salvador is very popular.

Simply put, you can’t be arrested and enslaved without being able to present your side of the story and then seeing what a judge or jury decides. It is wholly un-American. Fifth Amendment. And no Trump supporter would ever agree to risking one of their loved ones being grabbed and deported to a mega prison without due process. TGM: https://shorturl.at/QXJF0

The U.S already have guantanamo as their deep dark hole to stuff monsters in.

What is this move? And what is the purpose of such a detention center if it is left mostly vacant.

Ioan Grillo's avatar

Yes, I think by out-sourcing to El Salvador they would have less responsibility for any abuses and get the prisoners half out the U.S. into Latin America - even though they would still be officially in the U.S. justice system. My guess on their motives anyway...

The discussion in the US needs to be about who wants to keep those who are designated terrorists in the country . . . And why.

Howard Buffet ( Warren Buffet's son) has been a early huge backer of the El Salvador experiment. Strangely from my one talk with him years ago about the wall ( we both live part time in Cochise County) he thinks Trump is an idiot and just gave Ukraine $300,000,000 dollars on nonlethal aid .

Those who survive the one year term will be released back into society. That's if the one year condition is actually followed.

It's no secret that prisons are prime breeding grounds for gang coalitions.

I don't see how this ends well.

TNOs present gnarly issues.

Internal Central American politics present gnarly issues for the US. History teaches us that our actions in the region come with lasting consequences, knee jerk reactions by the US in particular.

Thanks for covering these developments. Your experienced reporting is important.
