I wonder if the tijuana and juarez cartels will be on there. Or at least what's left of those cartels. I can't wait to see if this will have a positive impact. Of course we need to stress every other tool before we use military action. And I am glad the united cartels are on there because they have caused pain to michoacan too. And it hurts knowing some of them used to be "self defense members" so this is justice against them

The info now is the Tijuana and Juarez Cartels won't be on there. I'm surprised about the Juarez Cartel. (The AFO are a bit old news...)

The tijuana cartel is still around they are just fragments of different independent criminal cells in TJ. Yeah that's weird they didn't put juarez they are every bit as guilty

But yeah the name "tijuana cartel" just stuck despite the Felix brothers being dead or in prison

Same with the "gulf cartel" and "los zetas" and even the sinoala cartel these names just stick over the years despite being fragmented organizations

It sucks Mexican criminal organizations now have to be on the FTO list. When the only groups from Latin America on there were from colombia. Now Mexico probably makes up the chunk of most latino organizations on there. Mexico could cry about the image that this gives them as a country but oh well tough luck clean up your country

Attacking multiple isolated cells of 5-20 cartel members would inevitably lead to videos of dead women and children after the drone strikes and then for one thing all the American expats are now fair game as payback. Being one on a part time basis I am not thrilled by this potential development. Also simply jacking up the potency of the Fentanyl on the July 4 weekend would lead to OD deaths in the 1000s and overwhelmed the EU hospital system

That is the scenario I most fear - ane hope it doesnt come to that.

I don't think cartels will stark kidnapping American expats or tourists in Mexico now. That would just bring even more heat but who knows they could get desperate if they feel the pressure from this FTO designation. Plus Mexico would be forced to clamp down even harder on them because it would damage their tourism and expat industry

Agreed. There is an important story though on this that low level narcillos, corrupt cops and dodgy taxi drivers are damaging tourism from Cancún to Tulum by shaking down tourists...

Isn't greedy taxi drivers a common thing in Latin American nations?

Expand full comment
Ioan Grillo's avatar

They vary, and there are many many great ones I have had. But it's not just overcharging by a few bucks. It's taxi drivers like charging 100 bucks for 10 buck rides and threatening if they don't pay - there are now videos out on this...

MS-13 are indeed formed in LA and still present. Not to be messed with. Also hearing rumors that El Mayo is sharing info with the US gov about his dealings with the Mexican gov to get a plea deal. That could really up the ante in terms of a response. Like why go after some cartel operation if they find out that they are aligned with the gov and the military?

A fascinating story the MS-13 have and it's interesting to see them back in the headlines. As for El Mayo making a deal - a ver!
