On July 16, former DEA agent Paul Campo went to a flash Manhattan restaurant to meet what seemed like a whale of a client for his private consulting business, according to a federal indictment. Campo’s company Global Financial Consultants (GFC) offers a range of services, from help against money laundering to asset tracing and VIP security. Campo has an impressive career to back up this portfolio, working 25 years at the DEA and finishing as the Deputy Chief of the Office of Financial Operations in 2016.

Along with his associate Robert Sensi, the indictment says, Campo talked with the client in the restaurant about handling $12 million in funds, which they would put into crypto currency and real estate. The client had already moved $750,000 with them to gain trust but now he was ready to take it to the next level. The funds, the client said, were from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG, one of the biggest and most violent criminal organizations on the planet.

Campo and Sensi also agreed to look into helping the client acquire drones and military grade weapons for the CJNG, including rocket propelled grenades. “What we do with the drones, we put explosives and we just send it over there, boom,” the client said. They had also, the indictment says, shifted money they were told was directly part of a cocaine deal for the client.

It looked like a massive pay day for Campo. But the client was in fact…
