UPDATE at 14:15 CT with new info throughout

In one of the most brazen and momentous special forces operations in history, U.S. troops, reportedly from the Army’s Delta Force, captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in Caracas and flew them to a U.S. naval ship from where they will be taken to New York, according to President Donald Trump. The extraordinary rendition was accompanied by bombing of at least four locations in the Caracas area, and possibly more across Venezuela, with an unknown number of casualties. Following the operation, Trump said, “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” although he was ambiguous whether this meant U.S. troops based on the ground.

The CIA assisted in the operation, keeping tabs on Maduro’s location using an inside source, according to the New York Times. The special forces moved on Maduro and his wife while they were sleeping and they handed themselves in without U.S. casualties, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine. The U.S. special forces exchanged fire with Venezuelan troops in the operation, Caine said, while giving no number of fatalities. It is unclear if any Venezuelan officers helped hand Maduro over.

It was a high risk move by President Donald Trump that has been operationally successful in this capture phase and dramatically changes the political situation…
